The Richard M. Ross Art Museum opened its doors to the public in October of 2002. The first exhibition occupied all four of the museum’s galleries and proved extremely popular with the many visitors who came to see both the artwork and the newly renovated facility. Once open, word about the new facilities and the quality of the exhibitions being mounted in the museum spread rapidly among both casual visitors and practicing artists throughout the region. The steady growth of attendance numbers suggests that the exhibitions we mount and the programming we offer meet the high expectations of a regional viewing audience that is comprised of persons of all ages from different segments of society. And the list of artists seeking the opportunity to exhibit their work in the museum is ever growing.

Known affectionately as The Ross, the museum’s first obligation is to mount exhibitions that relate to and enhance the curriculum of the fine arts department. Even so, at any given time during each school year, the museum’s programming endeavors to relate to and enrich the course offerings in one or more of the other academic departments and as many of the university’s special programs as possible.
